We got our 6 month old kitty the scratching ball, and at first it looked like a flop. He sniffed politely but refused to scratch. I thought it was a loss, but two days later discovered the clown in a full belly flop over the top of it, scratching at the underside. Since then it's just integrated into his activities. It's sturdy, the tassel on top is not really catching his attention. No assembly per se, but you do have to tighten the philips head screw that holds the ball tight to the base. On balance I'm glad we got it.
